Job Title: Environmental Leader –
Job Summary
The Environmental Leader is responsible for managing environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives within a CNC machining environment. This role ensures adherence to environmental regulations related to metalworking operations, including coolant management, hazardous waste handling, air emissions, and wastewater discharge, while driving continuous improvement in environmental performance. This position is a champion for reusing, reducing, and recycling all material possible in a safe and clean manner. Most job responsibilities are performed using a forklift. The job of Environmental Lead is 100% on the plant floor.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste programs, including proper storage, labeling, disposal, and recordkeeping
  • Oversee metalworking fluid (coolant) management, recycling, and disposal practices
  • Monitor and control air emissions from CNC machines, including mist collectors and ventilation systems
  • Conduct environmental audits, inspections, and risk assessments
  • Maintain environmental permits, documentation, and reporting (e.g., air permits, waste manifests, Tier II reporting)
  • Lead spill prevention and response programs (SPCC plans, secondary containment)
  • Train employees on environmental procedures, chemical handling, and sustainability practices
  • Drive waste reduction, recycling, and energy efficiency initiatives
  • Investigate environmental incidents and implement corrective and preventive actions
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and external auditors

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related field is preferred
  • 3–7+ years of environmental experience in manufacturing, preferably in machining or metalworking
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations (EPA, RCRA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act)
  • Experience with hazardous waste management and industrial wastewater systems
  • Familiarity with metalworking fluids, oils, and chemical management
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • 3+ years experience as a Forklift Operator required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Understanding of ISO standards

Work Environment
  • Regular exposure to machining areas, coolants, oils, and industrial equipment
  • Use of appropriate PPE required
